Family Dentistry

How often should your family really be visiting the dentist?

The answer might surprise you. Here is what we actually recommend.

Introduction

Every six months is the advice most people hear, and for many families it is still a solid starting point. The real answer depends on your risk of decay, gum health, orthodontic needs, and medical history.

Here is what we recommend for patients at Moonee Ponds Smiles.

The general rule for healthy mouths

If your teeth and gums are healthy, a check-up and professional clean every six months is enough for most people. That rhythm lets us spot early decay, gum inflammation, and wear before they become bigger problems.

When you may need to come more often

We may suggest three- to four-monthly visits if you have:

  • Active gum disease or a history of periodontal treatment

  • High decay risk (dry mouth, frequent sugar, orthodontic appliances)

  • Diabetes or other conditions that affect oral healing

  • Ongoing restorative or implant work that needs review

Kids and teens

Children benefit from regular visits as teeth erupt and habits form. Teens in braces or aligners often need closer monitoring for cleaning and bite progress. We will set a schedule that matches their stage, not a one-size calendar.

What happens at a routine visit

We check teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues, clean away plaque and tartar you cannot reach at home, and update X-rays when clinically needed. You will leave with clear advice, not a sales pitch.

Do not wait if something feels wrong

Pain, swelling, a cracked tooth, or bleeding gums that will not settle are reasons to call sooner. Same-day emergency appointments are available when we can fit them.
